Between Chapters doesn't ask for an email or password. Every install gets an anonymous account automatically. If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, we receive a unique identifier from that provider so your library follows you across devices — never your password.
We don't use any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, so we don't track you across apps or websites. Sentry is used only to catch and diagnose crashes and errors, not to track your behavior in the app.
Your reading position and chat questions are sent to Anthropic (the maker of the Claude AI model) to generate your recaps, character lists, and chat answers. Your reading data is also used to enforce Spoiler Shield's boundary and to track your free-tier or subscription usage. We don't use your reading data or chat messages to train AI models, sell them, or share them for advertising.
None of these providers are permitted to use your data for anything other than providing Between Chapters to you.
Between Chapters is available worldwide, including to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and Australia. Our servers and the third parties listed above are located primarily in the United States, so using the app means your data is transferred to and processed in a country other than your own. Where this involves transferring data out of the EEA or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, to protect it.
If you're in the EEA or UK, we process your data under the EU or UK GDPR on the basis of performing our contract with you — providing the app's recap, chat, and Spoiler Shield features — and, for diagnostic data, our legitimate interest in keeping the app reliable and secure. The data controller for your information is the developer of Between Chapters, contactable at the email below.
Between Chapters is not directed at children, and you must be at least 13 years old to use it, consistent with our Terms of Service. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us below and we'll delete it.
We keep your reading data and chat history for as long as your account exists, so recaps and chat stay accurate. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from the app's Profile screen. This is a hard delete: it can't be undone, and we don't keep a copy afterward, beyond what Apple, Google, or applicable law require us to retain for payment and tax records.
Crash and error reports collected through Sentry are retained for up to 90 days — Sentry's standard retention period — and then automatically deleted.
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit and access controls on our systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security, but we work to protect your information appropriately.
Wherever you're located, you can ask us to access, correct, delete, or export the data we hold about you. Account and reading data can be deleted directly in the app; for anything else, email us below.
We don't sell or share your personal information, as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and we don't use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. California residents have the same access, deletion, and correction rights described in "Your rights" above, and won't be discriminated against for exercising them.
We may update this policy from time to time, most often to reflect changes to the app, our providers, or the law. We'll update the "last updated" date above, and for material changes we'll notify you in the app or by email. Continuing to use Between Chapters after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
